Jack Ishkanes

Address:

khartoum , Sudan

Sudanese architect

Jack Ishkanes’ reputation of modernising Nubian architecture has grown to such admiration by fellow architects, that his imagery became broadly accepted throughout the Sudan. Perhaps the answer in part is to be found in his vision in search for a Sudanese identity in architecture.

His studies in the faculty of architecture in Poland and his Armenian-Sudanese background made him, as he says, to adapt architecture rather than simply copy. He absorbed the spirit of architectural languages, rephrased them, and added them to the traditional architectural languages; Nubian, Suakin, Pharaonic, Sufi tombs, and the colonial Anglo-Egyptian architecture.

He was named by Architect PhD. Hashim Khalifa, ‘The Godfather of the Sudanese Architects’
